Introductory

Liturgy of the Word

  • Responsorial Psalm: A psalm or hymn is sung or recited in response to the First
  • Reading.
  • Second Reading: A reading from the New Testament, often from one of the Epistles
  • (letters) of Paul or another apostle.
  • Gospel Acclamation: A verse (usually “Alleluia”) is sung before the Gospel reading.
  • Gospel: The priest or deacon reads from one of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark,
  • Luke, or John).
  • Homily: The priest or deacon reIlects on the Scripture readings and applies them to
  • daily life.
  • Profession of Faith (Creed): The congregation recites the Nicene Creed or
  • Apostles’ Creed as a statement of faith.
  • Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful): The congregation prays for the Church, the world, the sick, the dead, and other needs.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

A

Preparation of the Gifts:
* Eucharistic Prayer: The priest offers a prayer of thanksgiving and consecration.
This includes:
1. Preface: The priest offers praise to God, and the congregation responds with
the “Holy, Holy, Holy.”
2. Consecration: The priest says the words of Jesus at the Last Supper: “This is
my Body… This is my Blood…” The bread and wine become the actual Body
and Blood of Christ.
