L1-L3 Flashcards
(23 cards)
Biology
The study of life
Theory
A system of ideas intended to explain something (especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained)
Evolution
The formation of new species from pre-existing ancestor species via natural selection and descent with modification
The Scientific Method
AKA scientific inquiry, a guiding set of principles based on logic and reason for conducting scientific investigations
Reason
The power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by a process of logic
Logic
Reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity
Bias
A particular preference or POV that is personal rather than scientific
Critical thinking
The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment
Anatomy
The science that studies the structure of the body
Physiology
The study of way a living organisms or its bodily parts function
Hydrophilic
Any chemical substance that reacts with, or dissolves in water
Hydrophobic
any chemical substance that does not react with nor dissolves in water
Amphipathic
any chemical substance that possesses both hydrophilic and hydrophobic proeprties
Biological macromolecules
the major types of chemicals that living organisms used to construct the cells, tissues, and bodies and as sources of energy
Lipids
AKA fats, hydrophobic molecules that primarily act as connective tissues, as an energy source, and as energy storage
Carbohydrates
AKA sugars and starches, hydrophilic molecules that primarily act as an energy source and as energy storage
Nucleic acids
chemicals constructed of a sugar-phosphate backbone that supports nitrogenous bases called nucleotides
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
“DNA” - a double stranded nucleic acid that stores information in a sequence of paired nucelotides
Ribonucleic Acid
“RNA” - a single stranded nucleic acid that transmits hereditary information from the cell nucleus to the cell’s organelles
Protein
Multipurpose chemicals within cells constructed of amino acids
Amino Acid
Chemical building blocks that make proteins consisting of an amino group (NH3(, a carboxyl group (COOH), and a functional R-group
Nutrient
Any chemical compound that the body uses for raw materials, energy, and facilitating biological reactions
