L4-Cardiovascular System Flashcards
(26 cards)
Blood
A fluid connective tissue consisting of blood cells, dissolved nutrients and ions suspended in a water liquid
Plasma
A yellow, water liquid that is the fluid medium of blood
Erythrocytes
AKA red blood cells (RBCs) - disc-shaped cells that contain hemoglobin for the transport of gasses throughout the body, particularly O2 and CO2
Leukocytes
AKA white blood cells (WBCs) - a class of lymphocyte that patrols the blood to eliminate pathogens and foreign materials
Platelets
Fragments of cells derived from the bone marrow that help facilitate blood clotting
Blood vessels
Tubular, muscular orgnas that convey blood through the body
Artery
blood vessels with thick, muscular walls that convey blood away from the heart
Vein
blood vessels with thinner, muscular walls that convey blood back to the heart
Capillaries
Network or small blood vessels within and surrounding organs and tissues where gasses and nutrients are exchanged between the blood and body
Heart
A four chambered, muscular pump that forces the movement of blood throughout the entire body
Right atrium
The chamber that accepts oxygen depleted blood from the body
Tricuspid valve
One-way valve between the chambers of the right side of the heart that prevents back flow from the ventirlce into the atrium
Right ventricle
The chamber that accepts oxygen depleted blood from the right atrium, and contracts to force blood into the lungs
Pulmonary valve
the one-way valve between teh right ventricle and pulmonary artery; prevents backflow from the artery into the ventricle
Left atrium
the chamber that accepts oxygen rich blood from the lungs
Mitral valve
One-way valve between the chambers of the left side of the heart that prevents backflow from the ventricle into the atrium
Left ventricle
Chamber that accepts oxygen rich blood from the left atrium and forces out to the body via the aorta
Aortic valve
the one-way valve between the left ventricle and aorta and prevents back flow between teh aorta and left ventricle
Systemic circuit
the blood vessels that convey oxygen rich blood from the heart to all the organ systems and return oxygen depleted blood to the heart
Pulmonary circuit
the blood vessels that convey oxygen depleted blood from the heart, through the lungs, and returns oxygen rich blood to the heart
Pulmonary artery
A Y or T-shaped artery that exits the top of the right side of the heart that conveys oxygen depleted blood from the heart to the lungs
Pulmonary veins
A pair of veins, one on each side, that returns oxygen rich blood from the lungs back to the heart
Aorta
The largest artery in terms of diameter and volume that comes straight from the top of the heart and loops down following the spine down to the middle of the pelvic region - all other arteries branch off from the aorta
Vena cava
The largest vein in terms of diameter and volume, the vein into which all systemic veins converge to return oxygen depleted blood to the heart
