L17 - Connectivity and Circulation Flashcards
(15 cards)
Somatic sensory
Types of white matter tracts (Telencephalon)
- Projection (up down) fibres (internal capsule, corona radiata)
- Association fibres (within 1 hemisphere, don’t cross midline)
- Commisural fibres (connect similar areas in left and right hemispheres = corpus collosum, anterior commissure… posterior commisure IS NOT commisural, part of midbrain instead)
Association fibres (1 hemisphere)
Short fibres - connect adjacent gyri
Long fibres - connect lobes
Corpus collosum
- Genu connects frontal
- Splenium connects occipital lobes
Projection fibres
Ascending and descending
Connect cerebral cortex to subcortical structures
Somatotopic organization of the POSTERIOR LIMB of the internal capsule
Posterior limb = somatosensory and somatomotor:
Head and neck (near genu)
Upper limb
Trunk
Lower limb
ANTERIOR CIRCULATION
- (supplies 80% of brain)
1. Internal carotid (Opthalmic, anterior choroidal, posterior communicating)
2. Anterior cerebral
3. Middle cerebral
Anterior cerebral artery
Travels over corpus collosum
Middle cerebral artery
travels in lateral sulcus
Lenticulostriate and perforating branches
Supply deep structures
Circle of willis

POSTERIOR CIRCULATION
Vertebral arteries FORM BASILAR, POSTERIOR CEREBRAL ARTERIES
Pathway of vertebral arteries
- anterior spinal
- cerebellar
- form BASILAR
- cerebellar arteries
- pontine arteries
- BRANCH INTO TWO POSTERIOR CEREBRAL
Internal capsule - ANTERIOR LIMB
fibres travel to prefrontal cortex
Pathway of internal carotid arteries
- Enter skull through carotid canal
- Foramen lacerum
- Cavernous sinus
- OPTHALMIC, POSTERIOR, anterior choroidal, anterior cerebral, middle cerebral
