Structured interview
- participants asked same questions same order
- provides quantitative data
- usually closed questions
Structured interview evaluation
(+) misunderstood questions can be clarified so questions can be restructured
(+) quick and less time consuming due to closed questions
(-) interviewer external bias so interviewer may affect respondents answers
(-) lack qualitative and in depth data so answers lack meaning and depth
Unstructured interview
- informal in depth conversation
- questions are not pre planned and provide qualitative data
- usually consist of open questions
Unstructured interview evaluation
(+) useful for sensitive and controversial topics
(+) allows in depth response and ability to develop answers
(-) risk of social desirability bias meaning less accurate and valid results
(-) interviewers need to be well trained to conduct this interview and gain relevant data
(-) time consuming and expensive
Semi- structured interview
(+) comparable reliable data and mix of open and closed questions
(+) interviewer and participant on task avoiding distractions
(+) participants can clarify elaborate and rephrase answers
(-) low validity
(-) social desirability bias

Participants answers yes/no ( quantitative)

Allow participant to answer in their own words

Design of questionnaires
- Type of data- open/closed qualitative/quantitative
- Ambiguity- avoid unclear questions
- Double barrelled questions- people may answer differently to each part so don’t use them
- Leading qs- lead participants to certain answers
- Complexity- use clears English and avoid jargon
Questionnaire evaluation
(+) quick easy cheap
(+) easy to replicate and reliable
(-) questions may be ambiguous and questions misunderstood
(-) low response rate and many questionnaires may be left unanswered
