L7 Flashcards
Experimental design
Process of carrying out research in an objective and controlled way
Experimental group
Participants exposed to the IV
Control group
Group treated normally and gives us a measure of how people behave
Randomisation
Controlling for the effects of EV/CV
Standardisation
Process in which procedures used in research are kept the same
Independent groups design
Two groups are exposed to different experimental conditions
Independent groups design evaluation
(+) no order effects from doing both conditions
(+) limited demand characteristics
(-) twice as many participants so time consuming
(-) individual differences may make results unreliable
Repeated measures design
Multiple measures of the same variable taken on the same/ matched subjects
Repeated measures evaluation
(+) efficient and keep variability low
(+) order effects reduced by counterbalancing
(-) participants may not be present in all conditions due to locations or time constraints
Order effects
Participants responses are affected by the order of conditions to which they were exposed
Counterbalancing
Deals with order effects when using a repeated measures design.
Matched pairs design
Participants are matched in terms of key variables such as age or status
Matched pairs evaluation
(+) no order effects
(+) less demand characteristics
(-) matching is difficult and time consuming
(-) more participants required
