Lab 13 Flashcards
(13 cards)
Lab goal - 13
Measure rate of fermentation by CO2 production in yeast run descriptive stats and variability
Glucose Reaction
C6H12O6 -> 2C2H3OH + 2CO2
Repeat vs replicate
Repeat done in same experimental run, replicate identical but different runs
How to convert from volume to mols?
PV=nRT find n
How were rates found and compared
Fermentation rate is slope from scatter plot compared across class w/ descriptive stats
What controls were used lab 13
Find baseline CO2 production without yeast fermentation, plot line and subtract from experimental data
Hypothesis vs. prediction
Educated guess to question vs. predicted outcome based on experimental design considering each variable.
Overall Reaction yeast
C6H12O6+2ADP+2P=2 ethanol+2CO2+2ATP
Glycolysis and alcohol fermentation
Glycolysis splits glucose and adds electrons to 2 NAD+ (makes NADH&2H+) using 2 ADP + 2 P. Creates 2 pyruvate; which split into 2 acetaldehyde and 2CO2. 2 Acetaldehyde is converted to 2 Ethanol by alcohol fermentation - which uses the electrons carried by 2 NADH, restoring them to 2NAD+.
What is the purpose of the baseline CO2 control?
Yeast cells produce CO2 outside of alcohol fermentation, and even outside of the cells. want to just isolate this process
What were the two control cups
No glucose cup and no yeast cup to get total baseline control
What independent variable is being tested lab 13
[yeast] NOT [glucose]
What is the point of the NaP buffer
Maintains oh range for enzyme activity
