Lab 3 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is Diffusion?
- The net movement of solute molecules in the direction of lower concentration
- Moving down the concentration gradient (high to low)
- The greater the concentration gradient the faster the rate of diffusion
- larger and heavier molecules diffuse more slowly
- follows 2nd law of thermodynamics
- Polarity of a molecule can affect diffusion
What is living Protoplasm?
a watery mixture where many materials are dissolved or suspended
What is osmosis?
Th diffusion of water across a semi permeable membrane
What is tonicity?
the ability of a solution to cause a cell to swell or to shrink
What is hypertonic mean?
greater amount of concentration than _______
What is hypotonic mean?
Lesser amount concentration than ________
What is isotonic mean?
two equally concentrated solutions
What is osmotic pressure?
pressure produced y the osmosis of water
What does aquaporins mean?
water channels/ pores that help facilitate the diffusion of water
What is Plasmolysis?
when a living cell placed in a hypertonic solution and shrinks due to osmotic water loss
What is turgor pressure?
osmotic pressure that gives non=woody plants their structural support. Plants have ridged walls so won’t burst but they become turgid.
What is dialysis tubing made of?
cellulose
What is catalase?
an enzyme that has a protective function in cells, breaking down harmful hydrogen peroxide that arises as a byproduct from cellular metabolism.
How many micrometers are in 1 division?
10 micrometers
