Lab exam 2 Flashcards
Labs 6, 7,8
What are pulmonary function testing?
A group of tests that measure how well the lungs are working
What aspects of lung functions do PFT evaluate?
Lung volume, capacity, rates of flow anad gas exchange
What is a spirometry test?
The most common PFT and it measures how much air a person can inhale and exhale and how quickly the expiration is
What are PFT used for?
- Diagnose lung diseases (e.g. asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis)
- Determine the severity of lung problemes
- Monitor the progression of lung diseases
- Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment
- Asses lung function before surgery
What is a tidal volume?
Volume of one breath or amount of air moved in an out the lungs during quiet breathing
What is an expiratory reserve volume (ERV)?
The amount of air moved out the lungs during a forced expiration, below the tidal expiration
What is an inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)?
The amount of air moved into the lungs during a forced inspiration, above the tidal inspiration
What is the residual volume (RV)?
The amount of air remaining in the lungs at the end of a forced expiration. Not directly measurable using a spirometer
What are the 4 specific lung volumes a PFT measures?
Tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume. inspiratory reserve volume and residual volume
What are the lung capacity a PFT can measure?
Inspiratory capacity, vital capacity, functional residual capacity and total lung capacity
What are values of volumes based on?
Age, height, sex and race
What is inspiratory capacity (IC)?
Maximum amount of air that can be inspired after a normal expriation (IC= TV+IRV)
What is the vital capacity (VC)?
The maximum movable amount of air in the lungs (VC= TV+IRV+ERV)
What is the functional residual capacity (FRC)?
Amoung of air left in the lungs after a normal expiration (FRC=RV+ERV)
What is the total lung capacity (TLC)?
Total volume that the lungs can hold during a maximum inspiration (TLC= RV+ERV+TV+IRV)
