Lab Quiz 1 Flashcards
tophat chapter 3 (12 cards)
what are the directional orientation terms for the human brain?
dorsal = superior
ventral = inferior
rostral = anterior
caudal = posterior
what are the directional orientation terms for the quadriped brains and the human spinal cord?
dorsal = posterior
ventral = anterior
rostral = superior
caudal = inferior
what are the anatomic planes?
sagittal plane: separates the CNS into left and right halves
tranverse/horizontal/axial plane: spearates the CNS into upper and lower halves
coronal plane: separates the CNS into front and back halves
what are the different layers of the meninges?
dura mater: outermost, thickest layer
arachnoid mater: middle layer that overlie the sulci
pia mater: the inner-most layer, not visible to human eye
what is the epidural space?
the space between the skull bones and the meninges
what are the anatomic lobes of the brain?
frontal: forehead area of brain
parietal: top middle of the brain
occipital: back section of the brain
temporal: sides of the brain
what are the functional lobes of the brain?
insula and limbic lobes
sulci vs gyri?
sulci: depressions in the brain
gyri: ridges in the brain
where is the longitudinal (sagittal) fissure?
separates the left and right hemispheres in the brain
where is the lateral (sylvian) sulcus/fissure?
is nearly horizontal along the temporal lobes, divides the temporal lobe from the parietal and frontal lobes
where is the central sulcus?
is nearly perpendicular to the lateral sulcus, lies in front of the most prominent gyri on the top surface of the brain, separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe
where is the parietooccipital sulcus?
nearly vertical line that lies above the cerebellum and separates the parietal and occipital lobes
