Lab Quiz 3 Flashcards
tophat chapter 5 and week 4 lecture (8 cards)
where are the posterior circulation to the brainstem and cerebellum located?
basilar artery: unilateral artery that lies on the front of the pons
posterior cerebral artery: uppermost branch off of the basilar artery
superior cerebellar artery: second highest branch off of basilar artery, under the posterior cerebral artery
anterior inferior cerebellar artery: located at the bottom of the pons located to the cerebellum
vertebral artery: lateral branches off of basilar artery on the medulla
posterior inferior cerebellar artery: branches off of the vertebral artery
anterior spinal artery: branches off of the vertebral artery below the posterior inferior cerebellar artery
(diagram on lab lecture slide 6 and in tophat chapter 5)
what are the arteries of the circle of willis?
vertebral artery: v-shaped branches on the medulla
basilar artery: unilateral artery that leads into the circle
posterior cerebral artery: lateral branches from the bottom of the circle
posterior communicating artery: arteries that make up the bottom half of the circle
middle cerebral artery: lateral branches that lie in the center of the circle, outside of the circle
internal carotid artery: medial branches that lie in the center of the circle, inside the circle
anterior cerebral artery: makes up the top of the circle and branches leading up vertically from the circle
anterior communicating artery: connecting point between the vertical branches leading off the top of the circle of willis

where are the dural venous sinuses located on an angiogram?
superior sagittal sinus: lies along the top of the cortex
confluence of sinuses: lies on the back of the skull, separates the superior sagittal sinus from the transverse sinus
transverse sinus: lies on the bottom of the occipital lobe
sigmoid sinus: S-shaped sinus below the transverse sinus
straight sinus: branch off of the confluence of sinuses that extends into the midbrain
(diagram on tophat chapter 5)
where are the dural venous sinuses located on a specimen?
superior sagittal sinus: located where the cranial dura mater fuses superior to the falx cerebri
arachnoid granulations: nodules that lie along the midline
straight sinus: located at the junction of the falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli
confluence of sinuses: in the tentorium cerebelli at the tip of the cerebellum
(diagram in tophat chapter 5)
what are the ventricles of the brain?
anterior horn of the LV: lies above the forehead of the seahorse
body of LV: main area above the third ventricle
atrium of LV: main triangular on the back of the seahorses head
posterior horn of the LV: point that branches off of the atrium
inferior horn of the LV: lies underneath the third ventricle
third ventricle: where eye of the seahorse is
fourth ventricle: triangle on the back of the brainstem in front of the cerebellum
central canal: canal on the middle of the medulla
interventricular foramen: connects the lateral ventricles and the third ventricle (runs from anterior horn of LV to third ventricle)
(diagram on tophat chapter 5)
where are the ventricles as seen from a coronal section?
body of lateral ventricle: main ventricles in center of slice
inferior horn of lateral ventricles: lies on the bottom of the temporal lobes
third ventricle: thin central ventricle below body of lateral ventricle
(diagram on tophat chapter 5)
where are the cisterns located on axial MRIs?
interpeduncular cistern: lies in front of brain stem
inferior horn of lateral ventricle: white mark on either side of interpeduncular cistern
cisterna magna: white space surrounding brain stem on base of skull
(diagram on tophat chapter 5)
where are the cisterns located on a sagittal sheep brain MRI?
cisterna magna: lies below the cerebellum
medullary cistern: lies in front of the medulla
pontine cistern: lies in front of the pons
posterior (pineal) cistern: lies above the cerbellum behind the occipital lobe
