What do several of the vessels that branch off of the unpaired arteries do?
anastomose together
What do anastomeses do?
ensure that ample blood reaches all portions of the gastrointestinal tract for maximal absorption of nutrients from the food in the organ

How is the blood supply to the GI tract drained?
hepatic portal system
what does the hepatic portal vein do?
Carry nutrient-rich blood to the liver
What does the liver do?
removes and stores nutrients, detoxifies and activates chemicals, and supplies liver generated proteins and lipids to the blood
Where does acidic digestion of food begin?
stomach
What additionally occurs in the stomach
enzymatic digestion
After the stomach where does food go?
duodenum where bile and pancreatic secretions break apart the food
What does bile contain?
fat emulsifying agents
What does the pancreas produce
enzymes that break down proteins and carbs
What do the villi in the jejunum do?
extensive nutrient absorption
What does the ileum absorb?
vitamin B12 and other substances
What does the colon do?
absorbs some vitamins and concentrates what is left of the food material by absorbing water and forming feces
What is the spleen and what does it do?
Part of the immune system but it also breaks down old red blood cells
