A

universal access
comprehensive - they could meet all demands and treated all medical problems
free at point of use
funded by national insurance payment
everybody celebrated it
before NHS, only one half of men qualified for free healthcare and it was reliant on charities

A

doctors didn’t want to become civil servants
new NHS has long backlog of patients
had to modernise hospitals
doctors, dentists… overwhelmed
8,000,000 dental patients needed to be treated
prescriptions cost 15 million per month
national insurance only gave 9% of funding in 1950
cost £358 million per year- double what was expected

1951 backtracked on free service and introduced charged for glasses and dental services and prescriptions
