LE1 Flashcards
(23 cards)
Biodiversity
The variety of different species that live in an ecosystem.
Community
All the organisms (plants & animals) living in an ecosystem.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species.
Species
A group of similar organisms capable of breeding with each other to produce fertile offspring.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives.
Ecosystem
All the organisms living in a particular habitat and the non-living components they interact with.
Producer
Green plant that makes its own food using photosynthesis
Consumer
Animal that eats other plants or animals to gain energy.
Herbivore
Organism that eats only plants.
Carnivore
Organism that eats only animals.
Omnivore
Organisms that eats both plants and animals.
Predator
An animal that eats another animal.
Prey
An animal that is eaten by another animal.
Niche:
The role an organism plays in its ecosystem.
Ecosystem word equation:
Habitat + community
What does niche relate to?
- the resources it requires
- interactions with other organisms
- conditions it can tolerate
Give some examples of plant competition:
- light
- water
- soil moisture
Give some examples of animal competition:
- food
- territory
- mates
When does competition occur?
Competition in ecosystems occur when resources are in short supply.
Interspecific competition:
Occurs amongst different species competing for one/a few resources they require.
Intraspecific competition:
Occurs amongst the same species for all resources required.
What do food chains/webs show?
Food chains/webs show the interactions between different organisms.
What do the arrows indicate in a food chain/web?
Arrows show the direction of energy flow.
