LE3 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the raw materials in photosynthesis?
-carbon dioxide (CO2) which comes from the air
-water (H2O) which comes from the soil
As well as the raw materials, what are some other essentials for photosynthesis?
-light energy (from the sun)
-chlorophyll (green pigment) which captures the light energy
Where can chlorophyll be found?
chlorophyll can be found inside organelles called chloroplasts
Photosynthesis word equation:
light energy
CO2 + water ———–> glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll
What is stage 1 of photosynthesis called?
light reactions
What happens in stage 1?
-light energy from the sun is absorbed by the chlorophyll and is converted into chemical energy (ATP)
-water splits to produce hydrogen and oxygen
-the oxygen diffuses out of the cell
What is passed onto stage 2?
hydrogen and ATP
What is stage 2 of photosynthesis called?
carbon fixation
Stage 2 is a series of…
enzyme-controlled reactions (affected by temperature)
What happens during stage 2?
ATP and hydrogen from stage 1 combine with carbon dioxide to make sugar (glucose)
What are 3 fates/outcomes of glucose?
- used as fuel for respiration
- stored as starch
- converted into cellulose (structural carbohydrate)
What three factors are essential for photosynthesis (also known as limiting factors)
-light intensity
-carbon dioxide concentration
-temperature
