Learning through the consequences of our actions.
What is positive reinforcement?
Adding something good.
What is negative reinforcement?
The removal of something bad.

How are elephants traditionally trained?
Through torture such as hitting or stabbing the elephant when it does something wrong.
What are elephant handlers called?
Mahouts.
What is secondary positive reinforcement (SPR)?
Associating the reward with sound markers. Used to train animals.
What is TB?
A serious respiratory disease.
How are elephants tested for TB?
Through a trunk wash.
Can TB be passed between humans and animals?
Yes
What was the aim?
To see if free contact, traditionally trained elephants can be trained to participate in a trunk wash by using positive reinforcement.
What type of observation was it?
Controlled/Structured observation.
What was the sample like?
5 female elephants.
4 juveniles and 1 adult.
How old were the juvenile elephants and where were they from?
5-7 years old
Born at the stable
How old was the adult elephant?
Estimated to be in her 50s
Why were the elephants chosen for the study?
Docile, not currently pregnant or looking after a calf, and their mahouts were willing to take part in the study.
What was the primary reinforcer?
Chopped banana
What was the secondary reinforcer?
A short whistle blow
Did they have a good diet and access to water?
Yes
Where was the training done?
Indoors
What times were there for training?
7:30AM - 10AM and 4PM - 7PM
What did the mahouts do during the training?
They stood to the side and didn’t speak or signal to the elephants.
