what is sensitization?
an increase in later responding due to repeated exposure to that stimulus
what is habituation?
gradual failure of a stimulus to elicit a response it once did as a result of repeated presentations of that stimulus
what is an antecedent?
circumstances prior to a behavior
what is punishment?
a consequence that decreases the likelihood that a certain behavior will be repeated
what is positive punishment?
when the consequence is something that is added
what is negative punishment?
when the consequence is something that is taken away
what is a motivating operation?
events or conditions that alter the likelihood of a behavior and/or the value of consequences
what is stimulus generalization?
responding similarly to stimuli with some common physical property
what are some effective ways to increase appropriate behavior in children?
- positive reinforcement with praise and rewards
- focus on antecedents like effective commands
what are some effective ways to decrease inappropriate behavior?
- reinforce positive opposite
- extinction/planned ignoring
- punishment
