Lecture 1 Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the carnassial teeth?
Maxillary premolar 4 and mandibular molar 1
Function of incisors?
Grooming, nipping, grasping and tearing
Function of canines?
Used for stabbing and holding prey
Function of premolars?
Holding and slicing prey
Function of molars?
Slicing and or grinding food)
What is a puppies dental formula?
2x (I 3/3, C 1/1, PM 3/3) = 28
When does a puppies and kittens total deciduous dentition come in?
2-3 months
When teeth dont puppies have?
Molars and no PM1
What is the dog dental formula?
2x (I 3/3, C 1/1, PM 4/4, M2/3) = 42
When do permanent teeth erupt in the dog?
3-4 months incisors and PM1
4-6 months canines, PM2, PM3, PM4 and molar teeth
6-7 months Mandibular M3 erupts
Dental formula for a kitten?
2 x (I 3/3, C 1/1, PM 3/2) = 26
What deciduous teeth do kittens not have?
molars
Dental formula for a cat?
2x (I 3/3, C 1/1, PM 3/2, M 1/1) = 30
When is cat eruption complete?
6-7 months
When is secondary and tertiary dentine formed?
Secondary = deposited throughout life Tertiary = after trauma or tooth wear
What is the number given to canines, maxillary PM4 and mandibular M1?
Canines end in 04
PM4 ends in 08
M1 ends in 09
How is the starting numbers of the tooth system allocated?
Upper right = 1
Upper left = 2
Lower left = 3
Lower right = 4
What is the type of mucosa covering most of the oral cavity?
a non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium (buccal mucosa, labial mucosa, soft palate, floor of the mouth and ventral tongue surface)
Where is the oral cavity is there keratinised stratified squamous epithelium?
Hard palate, attached gingiva and tongue surface
What is a Mal/1?
Arches are in a normal position but one or more teeth are mispositioned e.g rotated, base narrower then canines
What is a Mal/2?
Retrognathism undershot jaw
What is a Mal/3?
Prognathism overshot jaw
What is a Mal 4?
Wry bite from unequal arch development with a centre line displacement.
Go through the calculus index 0-3
0 = no calculus 1 = some supragingival calculus covering <1/3 of buccal tooth surface 2 = moderate calculus covering 1/3 to 2/3 buccal tooth surface with minimal subgingival deposit 3 = abundant soft plaque covering >2/3 buccal tooth surface
