Lecture 3 Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What occurs in a simple extraction?
A
Removal of the tooth without raising a mucosal flap or bone removal.
Teeth still maybe need to be separated prior to extraction
2
Q
What is it very important to do while removing teeth?
A
Support the rostral and caudal mandible to avoid jaw fractures
3
Q
When do we do surgical extractions?
A
For canine teeth, maxillary PM4 and mandibular M1.
For this we need horizontal and vertical releasing flaps and the removal of alveolar bone
4
Q
What are the 9 steps for surgical extractions?
A
1 = Identification of root outline and structure via radiograph 2 = Raising a flap using periosteal elevators 3 = removal of bone >70% for canines and in cats >80% bone removal using a round bur 4 = Tooth division of multi rooted teeth 5 = Grooves/channels placed on the mesial and distal regions with a tapered fissure bur allows easier access for dental elevators 6 = Removal of tooth or its fragments 7 = Wound toilet/post op radiograph also thoroughly debride, irrigate and smooth over any rough body edges to assist in wound closure/healing 8 = Primary closure do a releasing periosteal flap incision to allow a tension free closure 9 = Analgesia/antimicrobials
