What condition is reversible and which one is irreversible?
Gingivitis = reversible
Periodontitis with attachment loss = irreversible
What is calculus?
Mineralised plaque
What are some conditions and genetic considerations which predispose to PD?
FIP (cats) and Diabetes mellitus (dogs)
Smaller breeds are more predisposed then large breeds
What are some signs/symptoms of PD?
oral malodour, pain when eating, calculus, excessive salivation, oral bleeding, inflamed or ulcerated gingivae, purulent discharge/tooth mobility, gingival recession/furcation exposure
What does a sickle scaler do?
Cuts on both sides can only be used above the gum line
What does a curette do?
Has one cutting surface and can be used both supra and sub-gingivally
How long can you target one spot of a tooth while using ultrasonic scalers?
10 seconds and should be water cooled as well as it generates heat
What process do we do after ultrasonic scaling?
Polishing it remove more plaque and stains
NB: do not stay on one stop for more then 10 seconds
What is 1st, 2nd and 3rd line homecare?
1st: daily brushing or chlorhexidine gluconate for cats
2nd: textural diets for mechanical plaque removal or water additives with VOHC seal
3rd: Polyphosphate coated diets and other treats
