Lecture 5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
How long is lignocaine effective for?
60-90 minutes
What should you consider when injecting anaesthetics?
The duration of action and ensure it will last the whole procedure
How long is Bupivacaines duration of action?
4-6hrs
Why is bupivacaine not always recommended?
Since it has a long duration of action you run the risk that if the dog doesn’t have feeling in the oral cavity when it wakes up that it may chew its tongue.
What can these LA do to the CVS?
Profound depression of cardiac conducting tissue
Can cause hypotension due to vasodilator effect
What can LA do to the brain?
Tremors or seizures
Respiratory arrest
What are some reasons for LA not working?
Infected tissue has an acidic environment that will prevent LA from working they prefer a neutral pH of 7.4
Describe how to do a caudal maxillary nerve block in dogs?
Measure the needle half the height of the mandible at M1 –> bend the needle at 45 degrees –> just behind the last molar in the middle insert the needle in to the bend –> aspirate to ensure your not in the blood vessel then inject
What does the caudal maxillary nerve block affect?
Complete anaesthesia to the maxillary teeth, gingival, mucosa, lip, nose, muzzle and hard/soft palate on the same side
Describe how to do a caudal mandibular nerve block on a dog?
Measure the needle the full height on the mandible at M1 –> bend the needle at 30 degrees –> track needle along the body of the ramus of the mandible and needle hub will sit just above the main cusp tip of mandibular 1st molar
What does the caudal mandibular nerve block affect?
Blocks all sensation to all the teeth on the mandible also blocks the lingual nerve so the rostral 2/3rds of the tongue are blocked
Describe how to do a caudal maxillary nerve block in cats?
Find the lateral border of the palatine bone it will fell like a notch palpate this then go just lateral to the notch. Only go 5mm in depth otherwise you run the risk of piercing the globe
Describe how to do a caudal mandibular nerve block on a cat?
Measure the needle the full height on the mandible at M1 –> bend the needle at 30 degrees –> track needle along the body of the ramus of the mandible and needle hub will sit just above the main cusp tip of mandibular 1st molar
Same principle as the dog
