Lecture 1 Flashcards
(40 cards)
Below which age are congential heart defects usually recognised?
6 months
What usually causes a cardiac cough?
LA enlargement
What does visible jugular vein indicate?
Increased systemic venous or RV pressure
Below what threshold do you see cyanosis?
70% O2 or PaO2 below 40mmHg
What side heart failed does ascites imply?
Right-sided
What value does pulse evaluation measure?
Systolic - diastolic
In which conditions do you see decreased pulse pressure?
Heart failure or hypovolaemia
In which conditions do you see bounding pulse?
Anaemia, PDA, aortic regurgitation
In which condition do you particularly see pulse deficits?
Tachyarrythmia
Over which valve is the apex beat?
Mitral on left, tricuspid on right
What causes a precordial thrill?
Turbulence
Which sounds is the diaphragm of the stethoscope used to hear?
High frequency e.g. 1st/2nd heart sounds
Which sounds is the bell of the stethoscope used to hear?
Low frequency e.g. 3rd/4th heart sounds in dogs
Which heart sounds are in systole?
1 and 2
Which heart sounds are in diastole?
3 and 4
What are the 1st and 2nd heart sounds from?
Closure of AV valves and then closure of pulmonary/aortic valves
Which heart sound is heard in a gallop rhythm?
S3 or S4, but can’t tell which
What can affect the first heart sound?
Contractility, e.g. louder during exercise
In what condition can the 2nd heart sound be split?
Pulmonary hypertension
What is the 3rd heart sound from?
Rapid ventricular filling (mitral valve open)
What conditions can cause an audible 3rd heart sound?
Vibrations in a stiff ventricular wall, e.g. DCM in dogs
What is the 4th heart sound from?
Atrial systole (blood into overdistended ventricle)
What conditions can cause an audible 4th heart sound?
Feline HCM
What are the two causes of heart murmurs?
Turbulence or vibration of a structure
