Lecture 10-11 Flashcards
(59 cards)
What is torque?
Motion that is generated by forces acting on levers about axes. Muslce contractions.
What is the force of a contraction dependant on?
The resistance
What is the origin?
The proximal attachment (closer to centre of body)
What is the insertion?
The distal attachment (away form the centre of the body)
What are prime movers called?
agonists
What are opposing muscles called?
Antagonists
Does each lever have muscles on opposing sides in all appendicular skeletal segements?
Yes
What are fixators?
Stabilizers that hold the other bones that the muscles are attached to in place
What are synergists?
Secondary movers that assist with actions.
What is muscle function and mobility influenced by? (5)
- Fibre strength
- Fibre flexibility
- Tendons
- Stress
- Coordination
Where does the sternocleidomastoid attach?
Base of the skull (dist) to sternum and clavicle (prox)
What is the function of the sternocleidomastoid? (2)
Flexes neck when both sides contract and flexes laterally when one side contracts.
Rotates head when one side contracts.
Where does the erector spinae (upper) attach?
Superior to the base of the skull running vertically along all vertebra to the inferior (sacrum and ilium)
What two muscles are used for lateral flexion of the neck to the right?
The right sternocleidomastoid and the right upper erector spinae
Where does the external oblique attach?
On the lateral ribs downward to the ant. crest of the ilium, pubis, and linea alba.
What is the function of the external obliques?
Trunk flexion and rotation
Pelvis stabilization and tilt backwards
Where do the internal oblique muscles attach?
The Linea alba downwards to the lateral crest of the pubis and ilium
What do the internal obliques do?
Trunk flexion and rotation
Pelvis stabilization and tilt backwards
Where does the Rectus abdominis attach?
Sternum and adjacent ribs to the pubic bone
What is the funciton of the rectus abdominis?
Trunk flexion
Pelvis stabilization and tilt backwards
Where does the transversus absominis attach?
Linea alba to the lower ribs, rest of ilium, and spine
What is the function of the transversus abdominis?
Compresses the abdomen
Spine and trunk stabilization
Where does the erector spinae (lower) attach?
The skull, vertebrae, iliac crest, and sacrum.
What is the function of the erector spinae (lower)?
Erect/standing position (anti gravity muscles)
Lower portion extends trunk
