What is a joint?
A point of connection between two joints (articulation). The strands of connective tissue, ligaments, hold the bones together and ensure the stability of joints.
What are 3 classifications of joints?
- Fibrous joints
- Cartilaginous joints
- Synovial joints
How much movement do fibrous joints allow for?
No movement (sutures of the skull)
How much movement do cartilaginous joints allow for?
Limited movement (intervertebral discs between right and left pubis bones)
How much movement do synovial joints allow for?
A Large range of motion (hip joint)
What does the joint capsule in a synovial joint do?
Allows for lubrication of the joint. Also may have thickenings which add support (intrinsic ligaments).
What are some examples of special feature which some joints have?
Articular discs, fibrocartilaginous labra, menisci, and intrscapular tendons
What is joint cavity?
Space filled with synovial fluid.
What is the synovial membrane?
Covers the joint cavity and secretes the lubrication fluid
What is hyaline cartilage?
A protective layer of dense white connective tissue that covers the ends of the articulating bones.
What is synovial fluid?
Lubricates the joint and increasing during times of stress.
What is the capsule?
Something which may or may not have thickenings called intrinsic ligaments
What are extrinsic ligaments?
Support the joint and connect the articulating bone
What are the two joints in the pactoral girdle?
The sternoclavicular joint and the acromioclavicular joint.
What joint joins the sternum and clavicle?
Sternoclavicular joint
What joint joins the scapula and clavicle
Acromioclavicular joint
What joint is the only joint connecting the pectoral girdle and the axial skeleton?
sternoclavicular joint
What strengthens the sternoclavicular joint?
intra-capsular disc and extrinsic ligaments
What joint joints the humrus and the scapula?
Glenohumeral joint
what two joints join the humerus to the lower arm?
Humeroradial and humeroulnar
What are 2 types of humeroradial actions?
flexion/extension and proponation/supination
What is a type of humeroulnar action?
flexion/extension
What do the proximal and distal radioulnar joints assist in?
Supination and pronation
Where is the radiocarpal joint located
Between the radius, and the scaphoid and lunate
