Lecture 14 Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
Early Challenges in Car Design
A
- start motor
- handle on motor
- turn handle would break wrist
- Complicated controls
2
Q
How ABS Works
A
- Wheel speed is monitored by individual wheel speed sensors
- Notches on rotating disks linked to each wheel provide a sinusoidal signal to the vehicle control systems
- Brake forces are modulated to each wheel to maintain wheel rotation
- Wheel rotation reduces slippage and increases braking potential
3
Q
ABS Case Study Results
A
- Non-fatal crashes were reduced
- Crashes with pedestrians were reduced
- Fatal crashes were not reduced
- Conclusion was that ABS gave a false sense of security
