Lecture 15: Nutrition For Infants And Toddlers Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are eating statement 1 and 2 and what 4 things are important there?
1: Aim to exclusively breastfeed your baby until they are around six months age.
2: Around six months of age, when your baby is showing signs of readiness, introduce complementary foods.
- Iron rich foods first alongside vegetables and fruits
- Offer a variety of foods and tastes
- Repeated exposure to help acceptance
- Texture progression; increasing different food textures
When is it suggested to start solids?
Around 6 months
What are 6 risks of early introduction of complementary foods (before 4 months)?
- vulnerability of gut infection
- diarrhea and dehydration
- impaired iron absorption from breastmilk
- infant malnutrition, including iron deficiency
- possibly eczema, childhood asthma and food allergies
- risk of overweight/obesity
What are 6 sign a baby is ready to start solids?
- They can hold their head up
- They can sit with less help
- Put hands to mouth often
- Open mouth easily
- Reach out for food or make chewing movements
- Can keep food in their mouth
What Is eating statement 3 and what 4 things are important there?
Once you have started complementary feeding, offer your baby/toddler a variety of nutritious foods every day.
- staged approach to introducing foods no longer required
- no supplements
- early and frequent taste exposures
- age appropriate textured to prevent choking
What is eating statement 4 and what 3 things are important there?
When preparing food for your baby/toddler, do not add salt or sugar, or choose products low in salt/sugar.
- do not add any other sweeteners/salt (honey, soy sauce, etc)
- mostly whole and less processed foods
- moderation
What is eating statement 5 and what 3 things are important there?
Recommended drinks for your baby/toddler are breast milk and water (once they are eating complementary foods), cows milk can be offered as a drink from 12 months of age.

- responsive feeding; respond to feeding cues from baby/toddler
- ## family mealtimes (modeling, positive eating experiences)
What were 4 guidelines that people adhered to well?
- progression to 3x solid meals by 9m
- only breastmilk/formula given by 9m as drink
- no sugar/salt added to meals
- eating iron-rich foods every once a day
What were 3 guidelines that people adhered to moderately?
- not having drinks besides breastmilk and water
- solid foods introduced around 6 months
- eating across the four food groups daily at 9m
What were 4 guidelines that people did not adhere to?
- not having chips/sweets/crisps before 9m
- eating fruit/veggies 2+ daily at 9m
- breastfeeding duration to 12+m
- exclusive breastfeeding to ~6m
What were 4 factors influencing lower adherence to guidelines
- first-time mothers
- lower levels of education
- multiple children
- high socioeconomic deprivation
What are 4 issues affecting nutrition in babies/toddlers?
-
Baby-led weaning: letting the baby feed themselves from 6m, given soft baby versions of adult food
—> more exposure to varied/textured foods -
Choking: babies/young children can choke easily as small air and food passages
—> make sure they sit down while they eat and someone is with them - Follow on formula: designed for older bottle-fed babies, not necessary and unhealhtier for children
- Baby food: food designed for ease of eating, can contain more salt/sugary foods/drinks
