Lecture 16 Flashcards
(13 cards)
systemic host response to severe bacterial infection
sepsis
Criteria for SIRS
- body temp >38 of <36 C
- heart rate >90 beats/min
- respiratory rate >20 breaths/min
- WBC>13K or <4K, or >10% bands
sepsis with refractory hypotension
septic shock
sepsis with positive blood culture
septicemia
bacteria within bloodstream
bacteremia
colonization
presence of microbes without inflammatory response
sepsis mortality refers to deaths within how many days?
28
Process of bacterial killing
- phagocytic cells engulf and kill bacteria
- increase production of cytokines by inflammatory cells
Cytokine storm (false theory)
- explosive production of cytokines which overwhelm inflammation and tissue injury
- host dies from exuberant host response not bacterial infection
Complement pathway
- fragments opsonize bacteria to allow improved phagocytosis and form MAC
- other fragments are chemotactic factors to recruit neutrophils
Hereditary angioedema is a deficiency in what?
C1 inhibitor
Protection from epithelial barriers
-intact epithelial barrier protect against bacteria and prevent infection initiation
Lymphocyte apoptosis
septic patients undergo substantial apoptosis in almost every organ in body
