lecture 17 Flashcards
5 key characteristics of chordates
a notochord
a dorsal hollow nerve cord
a post anal tail
pharyngeal slits
endostyle
what is a notchcord?
a stiff fibrous rod that muscles work against during swimming
what is a dorsal hollow nerve cord?
develops into the brain and spinal cord
what does a post anal tail do?
facilitates locomotion in water and balance on land
what do pharyngeal slits do?
allow filter feeding but evolved into gills in many chordates
what do endostyles do?
assist in filter feeding but evolved into the thyroid in many chordates
what is the primary function of the vertebral column/spine
to protect the nerve cord
also allows efficient movement
what did amniotic eggs allow?
reptiles to lay eggs on land and eliminate the larvae stage
