The sample mean is the average of the quantities in the sample. Calculate it by summing up all of the values and dividing by the sample size.

we can see that s2 is effectively the average of the squared deviations of the individual data values (xi) from their mean (x).
The sample variance is an overall measure of the extent to which the xi values differ from their mean (x).

original data (taking the square root cancels the squaring).
