Q

sample variance

A

s^2

we can see that s2 is effectively the average of the squared deviations of the individual data values (xi) from their mean (x).
The sample variance is an overall measure of the extent to which the xi values differ from their mean (x).

Q

standard deviation

A

sample standard deviation (s).

The standard deviation, s, is measured in the same units as the
original data (taking the square root cancels the squaring).
