Motivation
Anything that impels a person to action
Sport is voluntary …….
participation is a statement of motivation
Example of Athlete motives
- Healthy
- Increase skill
- Enjoy/fun
Action is reflected in:
1- The selection/direction of behaviour (direction and goals/motives)
2- The intensity of the behaviour (energisation and regulation)
3- The persistence of the behaviour (commitment)
Intensity
How much effort/energy do we generate?
Different aspects of Motivation
Individual =Needs, motives, goals
Situation =(social environment)- coach, teammates etc
Interaction= Interaction- Individual<->situation (PxE)

Causes of SD motivation
- 3 basic psych needs (autonomy, competent and relatedness)
- If these three needs are met you are satisfied
Types of SD motivation (SD continuum)
Intrinsic <-> Extrinsic motivation
Why does SD motivation matter?
- Because it has a powerful influence on many outcomes
- Can impact performance but a lot of other outcomes as well
How is SD motivation developed?
- Can help you perform better yourself
- Can also help you help others perform better as well
Achievement Goal theory
- Task (mastery)
- Outcome (ego)
Most people have a combination of the two
