Self determination theory
Theory of motivation and psych wellbeing
Theory of motivation and psych wellbeing
- Increase SD motivation -> Increase psych well being
- Increase SD motivation -> increase sport performance
SDT overview
Social factors-> Basic Psych Needs -> SD Motivation -> consequences
Causes of SD Motivation
“basic” Psych needs: what is ‘Basic’?
Only a basic need if the need is blocked it has a negative outcome and if it is satisfied then we get positive outcomes
Need satisfaction -> positive psych outcomes
E.g +ve psych well-being; athlete engagement; prosocial beh.)
Need frustration -> negative psych outcomes
-ve psych well being;
Need satisfaction ->
Need Frustration->
intrinsic Motivation (I want to)
Extrinsic motivation (I have to)
3 basic psych needs (SDT)
Autonomy; competence; relatedness
Autonomy
- Perception of choice (want to not have to)
- Authentic sense of self-direction and volition
(Not independent or self focused)
Competence:
- Feeling that I have the ability and the opportunity to be effective/successful in my sport
- I feel able to express my capacities (skills, task mastery)
Belonging/relatedness
A sense of mutual caring and connectedness with others (e.g teammates and coaches); sense of belonging
Types of SD Motivation
Intrinsic motivation <- -> extrinsic motivation
– SD motivation continuum
intrinsic motivation:
- Action emanates from within the athlete
- Absence of focus on extrinsic rewards
- Participation is an end in and of itself
- “want to play”
-> love of the game
Extrinsic motivation: external
- Action emanates from outside the athlete
- Focus on extrinsic rewards (e.g trophies, praise)
- Participation is a means to an end -> reward
“Have to play”
Individuals typically have a mot profile with a mixture of
intrinsic and extrinsic mot
6x Behavioural Regulations: SD Continuum
(autonomous Mot)
-Intrinsic Regulation
-Integrated Regulation
-Identified Regulation
(controlled Mot)
-Introjected Regulation
-External Regulation
Amotivation
Absence of motivation
Performance
Hi Aut and Hi Cont rel to Hi performance (buffering hypothesis)
Persistence/Commitment
- Need satisfaction rel. to hi sport commitment
- Autonomous motivation rel. to hi sport commitment
Athlete engagement (aka enjoyment)
Athlete Engagement=4 dimensions:
‘dedication’, ‘Confident’, ‘vigour’ and ‘enthusiasm’ in sport
Need satisfaction rel. to hi athlete engagement
Athlete Burnout
Athlete Burnout= 3 dimensions:
‘Emotional and physical exhaustion. ‘sport deviation’, and ‘reduction sense of accomplishment in sport’
