Lecture 5 Flashcards
(26 cards)
Fundamental achievement goal is:
- Perceived Ability /perceived competence
Goal Orientation (~ ‘trait-like’)
- Task (mastery)
- Ego (outcome)
Goal states
- Task-involved (mastery)
- Ego-involved (outcome)
Perceived Ability / Perceived Competence
‘How’ we define success/failure
Two major conceptions of ability
-> Task- vs. Ego-involved
Task Orientation
- Focus on task/skill mastery
- Sport is ‘an and in itself’
- Self-focus (~’Intrinsic’)
“how to win”
Ego Orientation
- Focus on social comparison and competition
- Sport is a ‘means to an end’
- Ego= related to pride and shame
- Other-focus (~extrinsic)
“winning”
GO’s are orthogonal (independent) not…
not bipolar
Goal Oreintation ‘Profile’ each individual has a Goal Orientation ‘Profile’ of
both Task & Ego GO
Best profile?
- Hi task/ Mod ego (buffering hypothesis)
Worst profile?
Low Task/Hi Ego -> risk of dropout or burnout….
Each goal orientation ‘profile’ represents an individuals unique
definition of success
Goal states
situation specific :how you feel right now
Goal states are dynamic
Influenced
context and social environment
Goal Orientations (P) & Motivation Climate ( E )
->leads to types of goal-involvement (states)
Task-involved (mastery); leads to ‘adaptive’ behaviours…
Persist in face of failure
Select Challenging tasks
Be intrinsically interested in the task
Ego-involved (outcome)- sometimes leads to ‘Maladaptive’ beh
Engage in maladaptive beh to avoid showing incompetence
* Avoid task altogether
* Avoid challenge
* Exert little effort
* Reduce persistence in face of difficulty
> Dropout if failure persists
AGT-Motivational ‘Outcomes’
Motivational implications of being Task involved or Ego involved or a Task/ego state ‘Profile’…
AGT-Motivational ‘Outcomes’ = 7 Outcomes
- Performance
- Affect & Intrinsic Motivation:
- Stress/Anxiety
- Effort & persistence
- Athlete Burnout (AB)
- Moral functioning & aggression
- Psychological Well being
Performance
Task involved ->
Ego involved ->
increases performance
Increases performance; only if Hi-PA
Affect & Intrinsic Motivation:
Task involved ->
Task involved ->
Ego involved ->
Ego involved ->
-increase +ve affect/emotion
- increase int Mot
- decrease +ve affect/emotion
-decrease int Mot
Stress/Anxiety
Ego-involved ->
Increase pre performance stress /anxiety
Effort & persistence
Task involved ->
Task involved ->
- increases effort in challenging tasks
-increases persistence (rel. to dropout?)
Athlete Burnout (AB)
Ego involved ->
- increases risk of AB; if Lo-PA
Moral functioning & aggression
Ego involved ->
Decreases sportspersonship, increase cheating and increases agression
