what are some causes of malnutrition in nepal?
nutrition transition, climate crisis (earthquakes), loss of key infrastructure, cultural practices (early marriage, daughter aversion), lack of education, poverty, lack of land ownership
state of malnutrition in children (<5) in nepal
- chronic malnutrition is more common than acute malnutrition
- child malnutrition is of medium severity
- we see children being born with poor nutritional status
impact of ethnicity on growth
- race has a small impact on preschool growth, compared to environmental impacts
- only tends to differ with adolescents
UNICEF framework
a) immediate causes: act on individual
b) underlying cause: act on household/community
c) basic (root) cause: act on whole society
underlying causes
household food insecurity, inadequate care, unhealthy household environment and lack of health services
immediate causes
disease and inadequate dietary intake
basic causes
inadequate financial, human, physical and social capital; socioultural, economic and political context; household access to adequate resources (land, education, employment, income and technology)
difference between old and new UNICEF frameworks
old framework explains causes and conssequences of undernutrition, whereas the new framework explains determinants and outcomes of good nutrition (more positive narrative)

improved survival, health, physical growth, cognitive development, school readiness and school performance
outcomes of good nutritional status (adults)- new UNICEF framework
improved survival, health, productivity and wages in adults, and improved prosperity and social cohesion for societies
