Lecture 3 & 4: Tissue Flashcards
(16 cards)
tissue
group of cells that work together to perform a specific function
types of tissue (4)
- epithelium = covers surface of the body and lines interior of organs and body cavities
- connective tissue = binds structures to one another and covers and protects organs
- muscle = facilitates movement of bony skeleton
- nervous tissue = nerve cells provide stimulus that controls body activities and glial cells support and protect neurons
epithelial tissue (4)
- cells held closely together by cellular adhesions resting on a basement membrane
- highly cellular [very little intercellular material]
- avascular
- gets oxygen by diffusion from underlying tissue
simple squamous (3)
- 1 thin layer of cells used for exchange [diffusion - filtration]
- blood vessel wall
- alveoli of lung
simple cuboidal (2)
- one layer of cube shaped cells
- glands
simple columnar (6)
- single layer of tall rectangular cells
- ideal for production of substances due to many organelles
- exchange across cells and absorption
- digestive tract
- stomach
- intestine
stratified squamous (6)
- many layers of thin cells
- protective
- beginning and end of GI tract
- vagina
- esophagus
- skin
stratified cuboidal
glands [ex. sweat, salivary, mammary]
stratified columnar
larynx
pseudostratified ciliated columnar [respritory epithelium] (4)
- appearance of stratification but not
- nasal cavity
- trachea
- bronchi
transitional (2)
- organs that need to expand/ dialate [ex. bladder, uterus, ureters]
- cells appear to change shape as they are stretched
endocrine glands (2)
- produces hormones
- secretes products through the bloodstream to act on a specific gland/ organ [ex. thyroid gland]
exocrine glands (2)
- produces a variety of substances
- secrete product through a duct to a specific location
unicellular exocrine glands
produce mucous [glycoprotein/ viscous/ dissolved in H2O] [ex. goblet cell]
multicellular exocrine glands (3)
- simple tubular
- simple alveolar
- compound tubular of alveolar
[ex. salivary glands]
types of secretions (3)
- serous = watery fluid
- mucous = thick viscous fluid
- mixed = combo of both
