lecture 35 Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
what is selective toxicity?
A
- use of toxic medicines more harmful than disease
2
Q
what did paul ehrlich discover and how?
A
- noted some dyes stained microbes better than host cells
- came up with the idea of a chemical ‘magic bullet’ to kill microbial cells but not the host’s cells.
3
Q
what is penicillin?
A
antibiotic from mould
4
Q
how does penicillin work?
A
Interfering with the normal
formation of the bacterial cell wall, by inhibiting the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links
5
Q
how does antibiotic resistance occur?
A
mutants survive antibiotic, multiply, all of cell is antibiotic resistant, can also use horizontal gene transfer
6
Q
what is beta lactamase?
A
Enzyme produced by bacteria and used to destroy penicillin
7
Q
how do we reduce the development of antibiotic resistance?
A
- decrease use
- improve diagnostics
- identify new targets
- combination therapies
