What are S/S of mycoplasma?
Gradual onset
Milder form of “pneumonia”
Scant sputum production
Often associated with pharyngitis and/or AOM
“Bullous myringitis”
Cough (dry)
Extrapulmonary manifestations
“Walking Pneumonia”
How do you diagnose mycoplasma?
Chest auscultation: often clear
Chest X-ray: often nondiagnostic patchy infiltrates (no lobar consolidation)
Difficult to isolate organism in cultures
Labs: often normal or nonspecific
Typically, a “clinical” diagnosis
Diagnosed by NP swab
Do you need to distinguish c pneumonia and m pneumonia?
No, because the treatment is the same
How do you treat chlamydia psittaci?
Tetracycline
Erythromycin
Is a gram stain helpful in determining chlamydia trachomatis?
No, because it doesn’t have a cell wall
What is the treatment for chlamydia trachomatis?
Zithromax(Azithromycin)
Doxycycline BID 7 days
What are risk factors for neurosyphilis?
HIV
Male
>45yo
What is the treatment of choice for Lyme disease?
Amoxcillin
Doxycycline
