What is SOftware
a computer program or collection of programs that is a precise set of instructions that tells hardware what ti do
What are the 4 major types of Operating Systems
Linux Unix WIndows Mac OS
what is an operating sytem
the interface between the hardware and the software; processes hardware inputs, sends signals to monitor, manages 7y allocates the computer's resources
Is Open Source software free?
not really, still need training nd hardware; rember TCO
Which Operating systems dominate desktop, server, tablet,a nd mobile
what is the definition of a platform
product that allows for the development and integration of other products & complementary goods
Where does the value of a product come from?
Where does the value of a platform come from?
product value comes from the manufacturing company
Platform value comes from manufacturer and the 3rd parties that develop complementary software

EX: Google Mail, Google Search
What is a Thin Application/ Thick Application
Thin App is one that requires little to no but stil has good capabilities (small footprint on computer)
Thick App has large install with lots of capibilities (large footprint on computer)
What usually works closely with an ERP?
What is a DBMS and what does it do
it is a Data base management sytem that allow for crating, maintaining, and manipulating data
What is the programming language equivalent of vocabulary and grammer
keywords and syntax
What is Firmware
software stored on nonvolatile chips that are permanent but can usually still be upgraded. usually insmaller devices
What is an embedded system
a specialty software that isinsterted into proctucts to make them smarter; backbone of internet of thngs EX:Otis elevator maintinece system
What is a sever
can refer to the software loaded on to a piece of hardware the fulfills the requests of other computers (can be a smaller machine or a server hardware) can also refer to hardware that fulfills the requests of other compouters
What is an API
Appliction Programming Interface/ programming guidleines that let other programmers know how to het a webservice to perform a task
Ex:google maps integration uses APIs
What is Service oriented architecture
a set of webservices built around an organizations procedures and processes
What is EDI & what does it do
Electronic Data Interchange/a set of rules that allow for computers to communicate 7 recieveing computers to read eh message/ its old and on its way out
What isXML and what does it do
Extensible markup language creates standards so that computers can communicate in a way that the receiving computer understand s the message. resolves issues of going across OSs and diff Hardware
What is IDE
Integrated Development Environment that contains an editor a debugger and a compiler(turns code for humans into 1 & 0)
What is a Script
a piece of code that runs within an application to automate prosesses
What % of IT costs are to keep the current mess running
