define exceptional
- exceptional is similar to unique, unusual, or outstanding in qualities of things or people
- in Psych, it refers to students who learn & develop differently from other students

differences of academically gifted and academically talented
- gifted ppl have a long time focus talenteds do not possess
- gifted quality cannot be developed but talent can be created
- gifted ability does not require hard work unlike talent
- gifted is a unique ability found in rare people while talent can be found in most people
- gifted people excel in several academic subjects while talented people excel in several practical subjects

- traditional understanding of gifted children: they excel in school
- obedient, does homework without much prompting, takes exam well, may face jealousy for being the teachers pet, have a tendency to become perfectionists, goal-setters
successful
- similar to “successful” in a way that they excel in a traditional school setting
- their difference is that these individuals are willing to push boundaries and seek opportunities to reach their goal
autonomous
- opposite of “successful” because they face challenges in a traditional setting due to their creative dispositions
- may excel as a writer, photographer, artist, etc

- gifts and talents are discovered later in their primary years (may be hidden or masked, or manifest during late middle school age)
