Lesson 4 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is the significance of skeletal muscle development and maintenance?
Vital for optimal health and well-being across the lifespan.
What can excessive sitting and physical inactivity lead to?
Dysfunction in muscular and skeletal systems, increased risk of injury, low-back, shoulder, and neck pain.
What are two common issues at the foot and ankle complex?
- Ankle sprains
- Plantar fasciitis
What is an ankle sprain?
Stretching or tearing of the ligaments that hold the bones of the ankle together.
What is plantar fasciitis?
Inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot, causing chronic heel pain.
How can foot and ankle impairments affect the body?
May cause dysfunction to other regions such as the knees, hips, or lower back.
What increases the risk of re-injuring an ankle?
Not properly conditioning it back to a strong and stable state after an injury.
What are possible causes of knee pain?
- Arthritis
- Acute injuries
- Overuse injuries
What are three common knee injuries?
- Patellar tendonitis
- ACL tears
- MCL tears
What can help reduce the incidence of knee injuries?
Proper exercise technique, supportive footwear, flexibility, and strength training.
What is the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex (LPHC)?
Anatomical structure including the lumbar spine, pelvis, abdomen, and hip.
Why is increasing strength and stability of the LPHC important?
Improves health, sports performance, and prevents injuries.
What percentage of adults experience low-back pain at least once in their lifetime?
Nearly 80%.
What is patellar tendonitis?
Injury or inflammation of the tendon connecting the patella to the tibia.
What is an ACL tear?
Stretch, partial tear, or complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.
What is an MCL tear?
Stretch, partial tear, or complete tear of the medial collateral ligament.
What common activities can lead to shoulder pain?
Routine movements like reaching overhead or lifting.
What is shoulder impingement syndrome?
Pain caused by rotator cuff tissues rubbing against the acromion bone.
What factors can lead to head and neck pain?
Poor posture, extended periods looking at screens.
What is ‘text neck’?
Neck pain caused by habitual use of cell phones.
What is forward head posture?
Head positioned forward, increasing workload on cervical spine muscles.
How can exercise benefit individuals with forward head posture?
Helps reduce lingering neck discomfort.
What should fitness professionals monitor during exercise?
Position of clients’ head and neck to minimize injury risk.
