What are 2 arterial systems in the pancreas?
- Pancreaticoduodenal artery
2. Branches of the splenic artery
What does the pancreaticoduodenal artery supply? (2)
- The head of the pancreas
2. Part of the duodenum
What do the branches of the splenic artery supply? (2)
- Body
2. Tail
Where do the branches of the splenic artery course?
On the superior edge tortuous
- before it enters the spleen
What are the vein tributaries of the pancreas? (2)
- SMV
2. SPL V
Is the pancreas intra or retroperitoneal?
Retroperitoneum
What are the 4 key regions of the pancreas?
- Head
- Neck
- Body
- Tail
What is considered part of the head?
The uncinate process
Where is the head of the pancreas located?
More inferior to the body and the tail
Where is the neck and body located?
More superficial than the head to the tail
Where is the tail located?
More superior direction towards the spleen
What is the echogenicity of the pancreas? (compared to the liver)
Usually isoechonic or hyperechonic
What happens to the echogenicity of the pancreas as you get older?
It increases
What is the echogenicity of the uncinate process?
Hypoechonic to the rest of the pancreas
What is the echotexture of the pancreas?
Homogenous
- can have molten appearance
Does the pancreas vary in size between different sexes?
No
What is the size of the head?
Largest in dimension
What is the size of the neck?
Smallest in dimension
What is the size of the body/tail?
Slightly smaller than the head
What is the contour of the pancreas?
Usually smooth
- occasionally lobulated
What are the landmarks of the head (in trans)? (3)
- Gastroduodenal artery
- Common bile duct
- Inferior vena cava
How does the GDA help us locate the head?
It is anterior lateral aspect of the head
How does the CBD help us locate the head?
It is posterior lateral aspect of the head
How does the IVC help up locate the head?
It is posterior to it
