lesson 7 - biomes produce foods Flashcards
(13 cards)
agriculture yield
the agriculture output per hectare of land
eg. crop yields, milk yields
how big is a hectare?
10 000m²
its about the size of 2 small soccer fields or one maximum sized soccer field
what affects the yields?
different types of production have different yields
if you increase the yield, you don’t have to use as much land to produce the same amount of food/fibres
the green revolution
- from the 60s to 70s
- 77% of increase in food production has been because we are producing more per hectare of the land we already use
- encouraged the use of technology like tractors and genetically modified crops
where is rice mostly produced?
- produced in every continent except Antartica
- mostly in Asia
- rainforest biomes are best
where is wheat mostly produced?
- produced in every continent except Antartica
- mostly Europe and America
- grassland biomes are best
what is the best daily temperature for growing wheat?
20 - 25
what is the best daily temperature for growing corn?
22 - 25
what is the best daily temperature for growing rice
30 - 33
what is the best daily temperature for growing potatoes?
15 - 20
what is the best daily temperature for growing soybean?
25 - 28
what nutrients do plants need?
- nitrogen
- phosphorous
- potassium
how does topography affect agricultural yields?
- when the rain falls, it falls evenly on all areas of the farm
- the rain doesn’t wash the nutrients of the soil away
- it’s easier to plant seeds and then collect/harvest the crops
