Lesson 9 - Extracting Metals Flashcards
(7 cards)
Why were some metals found from the Earth much earlier than others?
They could be easier to find or extract, and may require less chemical reactions
What is an ore? Can any ore have metal extracted from it?
An ore is a rock that contains adequate metal to make it work extracting. An ore needs to have a certain metal of percentage to extract the metal.
What is pig iron?
It is a form of brittle, pure iron that is prone to rust.
What is electrolysis?
A process where very reactive metals are extracted from their ores using electricity
What are the 2 forms of extracting metals?
Reduction with carbon, and electrolysis.
Would potassium use electrolysis or be reduced with carbon to extract metals?
Electrolysis. KEY POINT: if the metal ends with -ium, then it uses electrolysis.
Explain why some metals can be extracted from compounds by heating with carbon, and why some cannot - including examples. Add in a chemical equation of an example to gain points.
Write your own answer. Example below (continue the rest) -
Some emtals can be extracted from compounds by heating with carbon and some cannot. Carbon can displace metals that are in the low ranks of the reactivity series, as they need to use something more reactive to take place of the less reactive metal to extract the metal from the compounds. The more reactive ores are extracted using electricty in a process called electrolysis…
