Quelle est la différente signification de “would” dans les 3 phrases suivantes:

1) I would do it. = Je le ferais. Le “would” ici est l’utilisation habituelle du “would”, c’est-à-dire qu’il sert à rendre le verbe suivant à la forme conditionnelle. Exemple: I would be = Je serais. I would have. = J’aurais. I would like. = J’aimerais.

2) She wouldn’t listen to me. = Elle n’a pas voulu m’écouter. Elle a refusé de m’écouter.

Cette utilisation de “would” n’a rien à voir avec la forme conditionnelle. Elle est toujours utilisée au négatif et signifie “n’a pas voulu” ou “a refuséde…”. Autres exemples: I tried to start my car this morning but it wouldn’t start. I tried to explain to her my point of view but she wouldn’t listen.

3) I remember when I was a child, I would spend all my time outside. = Je me souviens quand j’étais petite, je passais tout mon temps dehors.

Ici, le “would” est communément utilisé pour signifier que quelque chose est arrivé de façon répétitive dans le passé. Autre exemple: I remember coming home after school and I would always watch cartoons on TV.
