Life processes Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the acronym for the life proccess? And what does the acronym stand for?
MRS GREN
- Movment
- Resperation
- Sensitivity
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Excretion
- Nutrition
What is movement?
What is nutriton?
What is excretion?
The removal of metabolic waste (chemical reactions in cells) from the system. (E.G. H2O, CO2 and urea). Also any excess substances.
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that increases the breakdown of glucose to release energy, this occours in living cells.
What is growth?
A permanent increase in size, mass and complexity.
What is reproduction?
The ability to produce fertile offspring of the same species.
What is aerobic resperation?
Oxygen is needed in order co create energy.
Formulae:
Glucose + oxygen == carbon dioxide + water + energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ++
What is anerboic resperation?
- Does not require oxygen
- Used during high intesity exercise where the body cannot supply enough oxygen to the muscles
- Formulae:
Glucose == lactic acid + energy
C6H12O6 == 2C3H6O3 + 2ATP
- Lactic acid is a bi-product which is toxic to the muscles. It restricts movement and can cause cramps.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Cells that contain a nucleus (E.G. plant, animal and fungi cells).
What is a prokaryotic cell?
What is heterotrophic nutrition?
What is autotrophic nutrition?
Ability to make own food (E.G photosynthesis)
What is saprotrophic nutrition?
External digestion of dead organisms (E.G fungi on dead trees).
