Specialised cells (animals and plants) Flashcards
(25 cards)
Name two specialised animal cells
Sperm cell, nerve cells, red blood cell, egg cell
Name two types of specialised animal cells
Root hair cell, xylem cell
What is a specialised cell?
Specialised cells each have a specific job to do, they have specialised features in order to allow them to carry out these jobs.
What is the job of the nerve cell?
To carry nerve impulses from one part of the body to another.
What is the job of a sperm cell?
It is the male sex cells job is to fertilise the female egg.
What are the four key features of a sperm cell?
Acrosome, Nucleus, Mitochondria, tail
What is the function of the acrosome?
It job is to penetrate the female egg, it has degradative enzymes which break down the outer membrane of the ovum.
What is the function of the nucleus? (in a sperm cell)
Holds the DNA (half set)
What is the function of the mitochondrion? (sperm cells)
It stores energy and is the sight of aerobic resperation.
What is the function of the tail?
Allows for sperm cells to move (locomotion).
What is the function of dendrites?
Allows the neruone to form the synapses with many other neurons.
What is the function of the long axon?
Allows nerve impulses to travel long distance in the body.
What is the function of the mylein sheath?
Insulate the axon and helps speed up the movemement of the impulse along the neurone.
What is the job of the red blood cell?
Carrys oxygen around the body
What are 3 key features of a nerve cell?
Dendrites, long axon, mylein sheath
What are 3 key features of a red blood cell?
No nucleus, biconcave disc and haemoglobin
What it the function of having no nucleus?
Allows for increased space to store oxygen
What is the function of the biconcaved disc?
To increase the surface area to volume ratio.
What is the function of the haemoglobin?
To help oxygen attach to the red blood cell.
What is the job of the root hair cell?
To take water and minerals in and bring it to the plant .
What are the three key features of a root hair cell?
Projection, large vacuole, mitochondrion
What is the function of projection?
To increase the surface area allowing it to take in more water and minerals.
What is the function of the large vacuole?
Stores SAP, increases storage space.
What is the function of the mitochondrion? (root hair cell)
The sight of aerobic resperation.
