Light Flashcards
(22 cards)
How does light travel
Light travels in straight lines
What is light
Light is a form of energy
What happens when an object absorbs light
The energy is transferred into heat and the object heats up
How would you show that light travels in straight lines
You would need 3 pieces of card, a light source, and your eyes. Put a hole in the centre of each piece of card so the holes are exactly aligned and then set them up in a straight line in front of the light source.
How fast does light travel
300,000 km per second
Does light travel faster than sound
Yes, sound travels 340 m/s (1 million times faster)
What is an example of light traveling faster than sound
Thunder and lightning
Transparent
You can see through it
Opaque
Prevent light through it fully
Translucent
Allows some light through
Reflect
Bounces light back
Absorb
Takes in something e.g. Energy
Polychromatic
Produces light in all colours
What are the colours of the rainbow
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
Why are shadows formed
Shadows are formed because light travels in straight lines
How is a solar eclipse formed
It’s formed when the moon blocks the light from the sun over earth
What is a luminous object
A luminous object makes and gives off light
Give an example of a luminous object
The sun
What are non-luminous objects
Non luminous objects do not make their own light, they reflect light from another source
What is dispersion of light
Dispersion of light is the spreading of light into different colours
What is a converging or convex lens
A lens that bends the light into a point
What’s a diverging or concave lens
A lens that bends the light outward
