What is a fossil fuel
A fossil fuel is a fuel that was formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that burns in oxygen to produce heat
Examples of fossil fuels
Peat
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
What is a hydrocarbon
Hydrocarbons are compounds that contain hydrogen (H) and carbon (C)
What are sources of hydrocarbons
Fossil fuels
What happens when fossil fuels are burned
They produce carbon dioxide (co2) and water (h2o) when burned
How is sulphur dioxide formed
Sulphur dioxide is formed when a fuel gets burnt the sulphur combines with the oxygen to form sulphur dioxide (so2)
How is sulphuric acid formed
Sulphuric acid is formed when gas dissolves in water
What is acid rain
Acid rain is rain water with a ph of less than 5.5
What is the symbol for methane
Ch4 (where c is carbon and h is hydrogen)
How can methane be produced
Methane can be produced in coal mines, slurry pits, waste dumps and digestive tracks of animals
Hazards of methane are:
Fires and explosions
Death by suffocation
Contributes to the green house effect
What are magnets
Magnets have a North Pole and a South Pole on either side of it. The North side of one magnet is attracted to the south side of another magnet but if you try and stick two of the same poles together they will repel
What is a magnetic force
A magnetic force is the attraction or repulsion of magnets
Where do magnets come from
Natural magnetic objects have been known and written about since the Egyptians and the Greeks
What is universal indicator paper
Universal indicator paper can be used to show how strong or how weak acids and bases are
What is the ph scale
The ph scale shows ph values from the strongest acid (phi) to the strongest base (phi4)
What is neutralisation
Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to produce a salt or water
