Science Summer Test Flashcards
(43 cards)
What is the unit of power
The unit of power is the watt (symbol for the watt is W)
What is power
Power is a measure of how quickly energy is converted from one form to another
An example of power
If a light-bulb has a power has a power rating of 40 watts, then it is converting 40 joules of electrical energy into other types of energy. (Mostly heat with only about 5% to light)
What is universal indicator paper
Universal indicator papers are used to show how strong or weak acids and bases are
What is the ph scale
The scale shows the ph values from the strongest acid (ph1) to the weakest base (ph14)
What do the colours represent on the ph scale
Each colour represents a different ph value on the scale
What is neutralisation
The reaction between an acid and a base to produce a salt and water
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that burns in oxygen to produce heat
What are fossil fuels
Fossil fuels are fuels that were formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago
Examples of fossil fuels
- peat
- coal
- oil
- gasnatural
What do fossil fuels have in common
Hydrocarbon
What are Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are compounds that contain hydrogen (H) and carbon (C) only
Name a source of hydrocarbons
Fossil fuels
What happens when fossil fuels are burned
When fossil fuels are burned they produce carbon dioxide (co2) and water (h2o)
What is sulphuric acid
When sulphuric dioxide (so2) dissolves in water it forms sulphuric acid, which is corrosive
What is acid rain
Acid rain is rain water with a ph of less then 5.5
Where can methane be produced
- coal mines
- slurry pits
- waste dumps
- digestive tracks of animals
What is a magnetic force
The attraction and repulsion of magnets
What is light
Light is a form of energy
Name other forms light is converted into
Light energy is often converted into other forms. E.g. Solar cells, day light timing on devices like watches
What way does light travel
Light travels in straight lines
Define the unit of power
Power is defined as the rate at which work is done
what are genetics
inheritable and non-inheritable characteristics
name some examples of inheritable characteristics
arm fold preference
“hitch hicker’s thumb”
pinkie finger alignment
tongue rolling
