What is MRSGREN ?
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Movement
What is a nucleus?
A nucleus is part of a cell that contains the genetic material, “DNA” the controls the cells activities “genes.”
Name the labels of a plant cell?
Nucleus Cell wall Large Vacuole Cell membrane Cytoplasm Chloroplasts
What are chloroplasts for?
Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll , which is used photosynthesis.
Why are cells specialised?
Cells are specialised so they can carry out a particular function. (So structures will vary.)
What are the 5 animal kingdoms?
Plants Animals Fungi Bacteria Protoctists Bacteria
What is the definition of a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction.
What is the definition of diffusion?
Movement of particles for a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is the definition of Osmosis?
The movement of water molecules across and partially per able membrane, from a region of high concentration of water to a region of low water concentration.
What is a turgid plant cell?
If the plant is well watered and its cells will draw water in by osmosis and become plump and swollen.
What is active transport?
The movement of particles against a concentration gradient, from a lower concentration to a higher concentration, using energy released during respiration.
What are the 3 factors that effect the movement of substances?
Surface area
Temperature
Concentration gradient
Carbohydrates are made up of…
Simple sugars, starch and glucose.
Proteins are made up of…
Long chains of amino acids.
Lipids are made up of…
Fatty acids and glycerol.
What is the chemical test for glucose?
Benedicts test - First colour blue, heat it, if it is positive it will form a coloured precipitate. The colour of the precipitate changes from blue to green to yellow to orange to brick red.
What is the chemical test for starch?
Iodine test - if starch is present it changes from browny orange to a dark blue black colour. If starch is not present browny orange.
