Structure of Living Space
The uneven structure of living space could represent the structure of the houses in the slums and how they are all different sizes and squeezed together.
Imitiaz Dharker context
•She fled to Bombay in India, now known as Mumbai, with her husband.
•She was born in Pakistan but grew up in Scotland.
“just not enough straight lines”
There is a lack of regular structure.
“that is the problem”
supports the informal feel as if the speaker is directly addressing us
“nothing is flat or parallel.”
there are various shapes and sizes of the buildings
balance crookedly on supports”
the instability and unevenness is possibly life threatening as it lacks what’s needed to be considered a safe home.
“nails clutch at open seams”
pieces of buildings gape apart and do not fit neatly together.
“the whole structure leans dangerously towards the miraculous”
‘miraculous’ implies that there is a spiritual force that holds them and keeps them together, the idea of faith being the only reason that the homes aren’t falling apart despite the severity of the danger it imposes
“someone has squeezed”
the home is tightly pressed against the others, creating an imagery of a very crowded place
“these eggs in a wire basket”
symbolises life, and how it is pure and fragile just like these makeshift homes that could collapse at any moment
“fragile curves of white”
seems unlikely that anything this delicate could truly remain unbroken.
“hung out over the dark edge”
‘dark edge’ is positioned at the end of the line, to represent the edge itself.
“a slanted universe”
‘slanted universe’ is actually the slums, but in the inhabitants eyes, the slums are the only existence that they know of.
“the bright, thin walls of faith”
represents those who cling to hope through faith and religion
